How does microneedling work?

Microneedling uses a specialized pen with very small needles to create tiny holes, or “micro-injuries”, in the skin to stimulate the body’s natural wound-healing process, while minimizing cellular damage. We use Bellus Medical's Skin Pen to perform our microneedling procedures. As the skin repairs these small injuries, it stimulates the body's natural ability to produce collagen.  Collagen is a naturally occurring protein in our bodies that keeps the skin plump and youthful.  Increasing collagen production helps to smooth fine lines and wrinkles while making it more firm, elastic, and youthful.
Since microneedling uses the body's own repair systems to improve appearance, results are not instantaneous.  It also takes a series of treatments to obtain the maximum microneedling benefits.

Does microneedling reduce pore size?

Microneedling does reduce the appearance of pore size. The tiny injuries created during a microneedling treatment activate a natural wound healing response by the human body. The skin produces new elastin and new collagen as part of this process, and it is the increased collagen that promotes tighter-looking skin and the appearance of smaller pores.

What should I expect during the procedure?

Prior to the procedure, the skin is cleansed thoroughly, and a topical numbing medication is applied to the area to be treated.  This medication is allowed to sit for 20-30 minutes, then the skin is cleansed again and ready for the procedure.  A cool gel is placed on the skin and the microneedling pen is passed over the area to be treated.  Depending on the size of the area, a treatment typically takes 15 minutes.

Does microneedling hurt?

The topical numbing medication helps minimize any pain associated with microneedling. Most compare the procedure to feeling an electric toothbrush being passed over the skin.  It is true, however, that the skin is pricked with tiny needles and there is a minor amount of recovery time afterwards. After all, this is what promotes collagen formation and skin regrowth.

How long does it take to heal after microneedling?

After the procedure we ask that you do not apply anything to your skin and avoid sun exposure.  After 24 hours, you may return to our normal skin care and sun protection routine as well as wear makeup.  A sunburn-like effect is normal for 1-3 days. The skin may feel tight, dry, swollen, or sensitive to the touch.  It is common for the skin to peel after treatment, this may not occur until up to 1 week.  Results may not be immediate as multiple treatment session may be necessary.*

Can I shower after microneedling?

Yes, showering is fine after a microneedling treatment. However, no products should be applied to the treated area for 24 hours (this includes soap). The small skin channels created by microneedling take 24 hours to heal over. Applying any products to the skin before this time can increase the risk of infection or allergic reaction.

Are microneedling results permanent?

Yes and no. Microneedling permanently increases the amount of collagen in the skin. However, the natural aging process will continue to occur – leading to a continued decrease in collagen. The number of treatments and the exact time that results last depends on a number of factors including your age, skin type, and how your skin responds to treatment.

Many patients see results within a week, including reduced pore visibility and increased consistency in skin tone. Some patients end up choosing a longer-term program with quarterly or semi-annual treatments to maintain results.

Is microneedling safe?

Yes, microneedling with the Skin Pen is a safe and effective treatment.  It's important to know that it differs from at-home rolling microneedling devices.  The Skin Pen penetrates more deeply than at-home rollers with a more controlled injury. This leads to improved results and better safety.  As with any cosmetic treatment, it is important to find an experienced team who understands the nuances of this treatment.
